According to UNESCO, the history of Okinoshima is about 2000 years old. Between the fourth and ninth centuries, this island was traded between the Korean Peninsula and China. Since then, it is here that the ships are worshiped for safety. The Goddess of the sea is a priest of the temple, the only permanent resident of the island. The old religious prohibitions of the temple are still valid on this island.

 According to this, women coming to this island can be at risk. That's why they are restricted. Men coming here also have to take a bath in the sea for purification before going to the temple. They also have the direction that they do not give any details of the trip to the island.



Temple priest Munakata Taisha says that women's restrictions should not be linked to gender discrimination. Years ago this ban was imposed for their protection. Now only those traditions are being followed. Taisha explains that the island is allowed to come only once a year on 27th May. That too only to men



Taisha says that during the war from Russia in 1904-05, the boat of Japanese soldiers was submerged near Okinoshimo Island. All soldiers aboard the boat had died. The ceremony is organized every year on May 27 in honor of those soldiers. 200 men were allowed to come to the ceremony organized this year.
