According to the Mahabharata, Maharishi Kashyap had thirteen wives. Among these, Kadru was also one. All the snakes are the descendants of Kadru. The name of another wife of Maharishi Kashyap was Vinata. Pareshraj Garuda is son of Vinita. Once Kadru and Vinita saw a white horse. Seeing him, Kadru said that the tail of this horse is black and Vinita said that white is white. There was a bet in both of this. Then Kadru told his Naga sons that they should diminish their size and kneel down to the tail of the horse, so that his tail looked black and won the bet.

Some snakes refused to do so. Then Kadru cursed his sons that you would be consumed by the sacrifice of King Jemayjaya. After listening to the curse, the serpent collapsed with the tail of the white horse, according to his mother's words, that the horse's tail began to look black. Due to losing the bet, Vinata became the slave of Kadru.

When Garuda came to know that his mother had become a slave, he asked Kadru and his snake sons to bring me such a thing so that my mother would be free from your bondage. Then the serpents said that if you bring us nectar from heaven, then your mother will be free from enslavement.

With his power, Garuda brought nectar urn from heaven and placed it on Kusha (a kind of sharp grass). When the snake went to the bath before drinking Amrit, Devaraj Indra took the nectar and took it again to heaven. Seeing this, the snakes started licking the grass on which the nectar was placed, and they felt that there would be a bit of nectar at this place. By doing so, their tongue became divided into two pieces.
