 He was selected in the Under-17 for the Vijay Merchant Trophy, showing Virat's best performance at the end of 2004 and, as everyone knows, Virat also has the highest number of 757 runs in 7 matches. In July 2006, Kohli was selected to tour England in India Under-19 and India went on to win both the series Viraat. Kohli got the opportunity to play first first class match for Delhi in November 2006 at 18 years of age. Kohli got the real recognition when his team's match was with Karnataka but just before the match, Kohli's father suffered a stroke and in this match, Kohli scored 90 runs and went straight to his house as soon as he got out.

In 2008, Kohli was made the captain of India for the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in which India won. In 2008 IPL Royal Challengers Bangalore bought Kohli for $ 30,000 in Youth Contract. 

In August 2008, Kohli was selected in the International ODI team for the tour to Sri Lanka, which was shocking for everyone as Kohli played just eight matches of List-A career.
